Saker juveniles marked with PTT in Slovakia

The RPS representatives have deployed 4 PTTs within the action aiming to measure the effect of wind power plants on Saker population. 4 juveniles in 3 nests situated near the border with Austria and Hungary were marked.

Power lines and bird mortality in Europe

120 experts of 29 countries participated in the conference ‘Power lines and bird mortality in Europe’ organized by BirdLife International and BirdLife Hungary. The conference was held in the centre of MAVIR, the Hungarian Transmission System Operator Company, and the focus was on the problems connected to electrocution – a major mortality factor for birds. Activities of Saker conservation LIFE project related to power lines (insulation, erecting nest boxes) was presented in the conference.

One of the events celebrating the 1st April – The International Birds’ Day – organized by the Bulgarian project partner, the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB), was a press conference at the National Press Club with the Bulgarian News Agency in Sofia, dedicated to the newest Life+ project „Conservation of Falco cherrug in Northeast Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia” (LIFE09NAT/HU/000384)

First two satellite transmitters ‘on air’

The second adult male Saker has been fitted with satellite transmitter in Western Hungary. With the help of the transmitters the LIFE programme seeks the answer for the following question: how wind farms affecting the movements and habitat use of the falcons? The ultramodern devices help to learn the relationships between the falcons and the wind farms. Based on the information gathered that way aspects of Saker conservation can be considered more effectively in the future, when designing wind farms.
