Successful breeding in a Romanian Saker Falcon artificial nest

Arthur – the first Saker Falcon to nest in Banat region after their return to the area - was first seenwith his pair by Milvus Group ornithologists at the end of February in that year, near a high voltage pylon from Banat region. Atop of the pylon there was a nest made of twigs and theterritorial behaviour of Arthur and his pair suggested that it could be the third SakerFalcon nest from Banat region.

Saker Falcon breeding results (2014)

In cooperation with colleagues working for state nature conservation, we have been monitoring the occupancy of Saker Falcon eyries in Hungary in the frame of partly the after LIFE activities of LIFE06 NAT/HU/000096 „Conservation of Falco cherrug in the Carpathian basin”, partly the LIFE09 NAT/H/000384 „Conservation of Falco cherrug in NE Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia” projects.

Juveniles on suslik sites in Slovakia

The repatriation of suslik (Spermophilus citellus) under the LIFE09 NAT/HU/000384 project focusing on conservation of Saker Falcon (Falco cherrug) has started in 2011 in Slovakia. Since then almost 500 suslik individuals were transported from donor sites to two repatriation sites in two project SPAs, SKCHVU016 Záhorské Pomoravie and SKCHVU017 Muránska planina. This year juveniles were recorded on SKCHVU016 for the first time. This means the reproduction was successful as well as the reintroduction. We hope the population will grow and a stabile colony will be established on both sites.

Csanád and Csillag have been ringed

On 19 May 2014 Csanád and Csillag, the young dwellers of the online Saker Falcon nest in Hungary, have been ringed. About 80% of the Hungarian Saker Falcon population breed in artificial nest boxes installed on pylons of transmission power lines. In the end of May, most of the Saker Falcon chicks are already 3-4-week old, which is an ideal age for ringing that can be done along with regular nest controls. The aim of ringing on one hand is data collection – number, age and sex of the nestlings, collecting prey remains, etc. - and on the other hand the ringing itself. During this latter, the birds are ringed with aluminium rings with individual codes. Those rings provide valuable information for conservation experts later, when the birds are found again, and help the more targeted conservation of the species.

The last year of suslik repatriation in Slovakia

On 1st April 2014 the repatriation of suslik in Western Slovakia has started under the LIFE09 NAT/HU/000384 project focusing on conservation of Saker Falcon (Falco cherrug). 18 individuals were captured on Bratislava airport and released on Tuesday. This year is the last year of suslik repatriation of the project. In two project SPAs, SKCHVU016 Záhorské Pomoravie and SKCHVU017 Muránska planina, altogether over 500 individuals will be released between 2011 and 2014.
