The UNEP/CMS Office - Abu Dhabi holds the inaugural meeting of the Saker Falcon Task Force in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE), on 29 March 2012. Almost 30 participants from 18 different countries were welcome, including Government officials and representatives from international and non-Governmental organisations.
The meeting was hosted by the Interim Coordinating Unit (ICU) of the UNEP/CMS Memorandum of Understanding on the Conservation of Migratory Birds of Prey in Africa and Eurasia (Raptors MoU). The need for a Saker Falcon Task Force was formally established by the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) Resolution 10.28, adopted at the 10th Conference of Parties to CMS which was held in Norway in November 2011. The Task Force aims to bring together Range States of the Saker Falcon (Falco cherrug), as well as co-operating Partners and other interested parties, to develop a coordinated Global Action Plan. This will include for instance conservation activities and a monitoring system to conserve the Saker Falcon.
The Central European, cross-border co-operation – and especially the LIFE programme – for Saker Falcon conservation was represented in the meeting by Mátyás Prommer. The conservation efforts and experience in Central Europe is worldwide acknowledged by experts, and a number of elements of that work can be applied in other parts of the species' distribution range.
